My mind is filled with anxiety as the week coming to an end. I planned to write some artwork review today but my anxiety for the near future made me want to spend some time resting.

Work and Art

Commission
  • I opened this commission batch around this time last year. That's a long time. I'm working on the last one of that batch now. This should be the most ambitious, most challenging commission (or artwork in general) I've ever done. The sketching and design phase is coming to an end, I'm kinda worried if I can render it well.
  • Should be done by the end of this month.
  • I hope I will finish fast enough so I don't prolong it for so long that I don't know if it's even good anymore Losing my self-assessment ability after working on an artwork for a long time🌱

Abstract Scribble One-edge brush test. Mostly from DAUB Spatula set and 1 homebrew. I don't know how to explain the effect. If I use it to parallel hatch, it can produce a dither look that has wildly contrasting edges next to each other. Synergize well with the flat soft edge brush that I tested in 2023-02-26🌱

Drawing Study Review

  • I have a hard time imagining outside of the canvas
    • so when I practiced figure drawing and ran out of space, I have a tendency to compress the remaining parts to fit the canvas.
  • I dislike doing polished studies. I'm trying to make my first or second pass looks more polished so I don't have to waste time working on the same pose for 5-6 times. (that's what I do for my normal artwork)
  • I said before that every practice session should have a goal but there are days when it's not going as expected and I lost my focus. I did expect it would happen sooner and later but not having a good practice session greatly affects my mood. I guess this is a kind of diminishing return if I chain too many practice session in a row without variety.
    • This needs a fine balance. Daily Practice or not?🌱
      • On 1 hand, daily practice helps me organize knowledge better. If I space my study too far apart, I tend to forget the experience and muscle memory gained from the session.
      • On the other hand, daily practice is boring if I don't perceive a visible improvement. (yes, Not all improvement is perceivable🌱). So I should add some other drawing practices in between.

Chaos vs Order in Art Workflow

  • Chaos vs Order in Art Workflow
    • it's a dichotomy/spectrum in workflow
    • Chaos foregoes any structure and is reactive to any situation by painting over directly on top.
    • Order is all about structure, layer management and limits surprise factor
  • I speculate that everyone has their own mix of Chaos and Order in their workflow.
  • it's more like a set of principles rather than a specific workflow
  • my workflow is a mix of the 2 but heavily leaned into the chaotic side

Balance writing and art

  • as I put out more content on this garden, I'm getting familiar with the process, and there are increasingly more and more written content I want to put out.
  • This might be a bad thing, because I should draw more Purpose of the garden
  • I expect this to slow down in the near future as I run out of things to write about. Let's wait until 3 more months to review.

  • The slower songs in this EP remind me of YUI's music. Really soothing

Bleach Animation MV with Kitani Tatsuya's Eien

  • It's mostly reused animations from the OP and season 1 but my god I felt very hyped watching this. The art direction, the compositing work with realistic light and effects, all the abrupt cuts. That getsuga tenshou together with the Eien title drop. Literally perfection.

    • Generally low-mid chroma colors
    • The use of handdrawn patterns with outlines can add density/high level details, even without much rendering.
    • Contrast of the tied hair with many colors and the skin regions, mostly flat colors.
    • Mika Pikazo is one of my favorite artists in terms of decorative drawing.
